GKA reports by KW ed Jim Gaunt
The first day of a 10 day holding period at GKA Kite World Cup Mauritius, being staged at Bel Ombre got underway yesterday (Friday 6th September).
This is one of three GKA events to feature both Freestyle and Kite-Surf disciplines this season, with 91 riders registering yesterday!
8 heats of Men’s Kite-Surf ran yesterday afternoon in stunning cross-shore conditions, at this location which is just 30 minutes upwind of Le Morne. Check the highlight video below!

This southeast facing reef at Bel Ombre picks up swell even when there’s very little around the rest of the island, as you can see. The cross-shore wind begs the riders to show us maximum performance surfing and there’s more of the same tomorrow!
The stand out rider of the day was on the water in the first heat, Brazilian Pedro Matos. Smooth, powerful and confident, his vertical strikes and sense of finding the gap to get one more lip smack in as well as his ability to pick out the biggest waves of the session were very impressive.
