GOOD FOR: Dreamy climate and standing-depth water within a beautiful nature reserve!
THE LURE
The tiny island of Tobago in the West Indies shows that true paradise can come in small packages. Just 26 miles long and seven miles wide, Tobago is home to empty beaches, exotic wildlife, lush landscapes, mouth-watering cuisine and wonderful local people. In terms of kitesurfing, you'll love the vast uncrowded sailing lagoon, the waves on the reef and the lush, warm turquoise waters.
Spend your days kiting in a beautiful nature reserve in warm, waist-deep water. What's not to like?
THE SET-UP
Pigeon Point is often considered Tobago's most beautiful beach with a long stretch of white sand and warm, aquamarine water. Pigeon Point is protected by a large reef that keeps the water inside the lagoon relatively flat and there are large areas where you'll be kiting in standing-depth water, which is a confidence-booster for anyone, especially beginners.

On a lower tide the water gets even flatter and some nice sandbars will start to emerge. There are kickers to boost off at high tide when the water also gets deep enough to foil in. There are a few wave spots on the outer reefs, which can be good fun when the conditions line up.
Pigeon Point is located within a protected nature reserve – the Pigeon Point Heritage Park - and you'll need to purchase a pass to kite there. Handily, you can pay locally by the day or by the week.
There's another beach nearby called Little Rockly Bay which gets choppier freeride conditions. Neither spot ever gets particularly crowded!
WIND, WEATHER AND WATER
The season runs from December to June, some years also stretching into July. You can get some of the strongest winds in May and June, but it's more humid around then and conditions are most reliable from January to May, with average winds of 15-25 knots on 90% of days. The best time for waves is from November to March.
Air temps average 31°C / 88°F throughout the year, potentially dropping to around 25°C / 77°F at night, so still very pleasant. The water averages 21°C / 70°F all year, so no need for a wetsuit, but a rash vest is a good idea.
SCHOOLS
TOBAGO KITESURF CENTRE teach all levels from total beginners to specialist foiling, wave riding and freestyle. Lessons are either private or with two students per instructor using regularly updated Cabrinha gear, which is also available for hire. The centre is open all year with longer operating hours from November to June.
