Peaceful, quiet riding in Brazil - this spot is still under the radar!
Enjoy beach-side restaurants and solid wind from the right, averaging at least force four and above. Low tide conditions are great for freeriding, freestyle and improving your level, while high tide delivers ideal jumping and intermediate wave riding.

Gigi Madeddu arrived in Praia Do Maceio for the first time in 2013 and was taken aback by the sanctitude and beauty of the place. He’d heard of Maceiò’s conditions through the grapevine and decided to take a taxi there from Camocim, where he was visiting on a windsurfing trip. On arrival the conditions were firing and Gigi immediately fell in love with the small village. A year later, he opened a kite, surf, SUP and windsurf school and, since then, the place has blossomed.
From August to January, Sa Barra can guarantee you wind almost every day. Located in north-east Brazil, Maceiò is close to the famous location of Jericoacoara. As a result, the wind is similar; stronger than that of the more southern freestyle lagoons in Brazil. At low tide the waves are smaller and sometimes flat with relatively shallow stretches between the waves making for a perfect freestyle playground. High tide is where the spot really shines as the kickers ramp up, lofting you into the air - it’s also ideal for any budding strapless riders who want some wave faces to nail their turns. Just a buggy ride away is Jeri - perfect if you want to shake things up and ride in strong wind, flat conditions or to enjoy the buzzing town and its vibrant nightlife.

WIND, WEATHER AND WAVES
The main windy season begins in July but kicks in properly in August, running through until December / January with wind on 95% of days. It’s often windy by 7am and regularly ramps up to 30+ knots of cross-onshore wind from the right in the afternoons. The wind carries on through to January and February and, although it’s not as strong during that time, it’s still consistent.
Water temperatures average 20 – 25ºC / 68 - 78°F, so nothing more than a rashie and strong sunscreen (factor 40 – 50) are needed. It’s cooler in the evenings, so bring a light jumper.

SA BARRA offer beginner courses, refresher sessions and private hourly 1:1 coaching. Additionally, there’s gear storage and showers right at the spot. The group teaching ratio is 2:1 and there’s a full kitesurfing equipment rental service, too.
Maceiò is an authentic Brazilian experience, so if you’re wanting to immerse yourself in the true culture of a Brazilian fishing village - look no further. In the village there are multiple options for eating out, with European cuisines and your typical Brazilian fresh fish meals all available. There are a few accommodation options too, which the local school, Sa Barra, can help with.

No wind days offer the opportunity to spend the day with the local fisherman or take to the dunes in a buggy. Visiting Camocim at night is a must - this is the nearest town (12 kilometres away), which has a wider variety of restaurants, an authentic Brazilian feel and all the supermarkets and banks that you might need.

Fly to Pinto Martins Fortaleza airport (nearly five hours by car) or Cruz di Jericoacoara (90 minutes) and then take a transfer (which the school can organise).
