The Kitesurf Expeditions eco-trips venture around some of the most remote and beautiful areas of northeastern Brazil. Respecting the local flora and fauna, you'll drive on off-road trails, secluded jungle tracks and remote backcountry roads in fully equipped 4x4s, remaining deeply immersed in the natural world at all times. You'll kite with sea turtles, meet a native Brazilian tribe and rig up under a full moon; this is not your average kite trip!
Kitesurf Expeditions’ downwinders operate along a route that starts just south of Fortaleza from Praia do Futuro to Camocim. The trip is broken up into seven shorter legs than can be completed or missed, depending on the conditions. The idea isn’t to rush through the trip, but instead to spend time appreciating the beauty of this incredible coastline and there are some challenging sections along the way as well.
PRAIA DO FUTURO TO CUMBUCO
The first leg is a 35 kilometre route with incredible views of Pecem Port, Beira Mar Market and the Guaramiranga mountain range behind the town.
PECEM TO PARACURU
This is of similar length with flat water and waves along the way. You get to take a break in the beautiful village of Taiba, a famous flat water spot in its own right, before finishing that leg in Paracuru
From there you’ll continue on to Lagoinha and then Flexeiras, shredding the massive lagoon at Barra Do Trairi along the way where, on a high tide, the 4x4s will be floated across on a raft while you kite your self silly.
The route continues down the coast, taking in some memorable stops on the way to Camocim. The team will guide you round tough sections, navigating round some sizeable wind shadows in lee of big dunes, making it a challenging endeavour in parts.
As you approach Jericoacoara you’ll be nearing the end of the trip and will notice how much stronger the wind is, but the support crew is never far away and they’ll be right there to meet you at strategic points with BBQs and fresh lobster for the ultimate post (or mid) session snack.
There’s also a point before Jeri where you can visit a sea turtle sanctuary at Projeto Tamar and meet members of a local indigenous tribe who call this region home. The route culminates in Camocim where the 4x4s will be waiting to take you to your accommodation and a well earned caipirinha (or two).
A DVD of your journey as well as stand-up paddle tours around Ceará and the adjoining states are also offered.
Wind, weather & water
The wind blows strong from June to January, with October and November being windiest months during which it can frequently push up to 30 knots. You'll need a 7 or 9 metre most of the time in season, with the occasional 10-12 metre day.
The water is a comfortable 27°C / 80°F for much of the year and there's acres of flat water to be had on low tide.
You don't have to be super-advanced, but these expeditions are more about taking in the coastline than instruction so riders who are intermediate to advanced will get the most out of them.
Kitesurf Expeditions will arrange your accommodation with superb lodgings where you can take a load off and fuel up after a long day on the water.
It's basically always windy during the season in Brazil, but if it's not during your trip then that'll be a great opportunity to engage with the beautiful surroundings that will surround you. Swim the lagoons, discover wildlife in the rainforest with your guides, go SUPing or chill on the beach and get to know the locals!
You'll kite the kiteable sections and Kitesurf Expeditions will ferry you along the rest of the way while moving your kit from one destination to the next!
