THE LURE
Spectacular beaches with clean and clear waters surround a relaxed, laid back Spanish atmosphere. Fuerteventura is a fantastic location within a short hop from anywhere in Europe and offers flat water and smooth winds, especially in the summer. Wave riders will find a consistent swell and relatively warm weather in the winter months.
THE SET-UP
Flag Beach is just outside of the bustling tourist town of Corralejo and is the most open golden-sand beach in
the north. The north of the island features a multitude
of beaches with many smaller beaches than the south as well as pretty coves that offer a variety of conditions. Mostly lovely flat turquoise waters and steady cross- shore winds in the summer. Flag Beach is long with reefs at both ends that go roughly 50 metres out to sea. The beach is separated with kiters riding more upwind and windsurfers downwind in front of the Flag Beach centre. El Cotillo on the west coast has more rocky outcrops every hundred metres or so. Another great spot in the summer, there is a bit more of a current running here and in the winter it’s a prime wave spot, attracting some of Europe’s best wave kiters. Glass Beach (Playa del Burro) is in a nature reserve about five kilometres from Corralejo and is perfect for wave riding. All spots are tidal and work on a mid-to high-tide.

WIND, WEATHER AND WATER
The NE winds blow from the left at Flag Beach and summer is the best time for wind. The trades can start to blow as early as March and remain good through to September. Nines and 12s are the most common kites. Winter brings changeable conditions; lots of onshore winds but also waves (bigger in the north of the island than the south, and if you look for them the east coast can throw up some good waves even in summer). Bring bigger kites to kite regularly at this time, but there are epic wind and wave days. On average there are three to four days a week of wind. Air temperatures - expect: 28°C / 82°F in summer and 22°C / 70°F in winter. The water temperature is around 22°C / 72°F in the summer, 18°C / 64°F in the winter.

SCHOOLS
FLAG BEACH is open 365 days a year. Beginner to advanced lessons are taught with a student to instructor ratio of 2:1. The latest North gear can be hired out and a rescue boat is at hand for all lessons and costs €30 for unlimited use for private kiters. Windsurfing and surfing lessons as well as rentals are also available. Languages spoken by instructors: English, Spanish, German, French and Italian Accredited by: IKO, VDWS and BKSA

NO WIND
Snorkeling, scuba diving, mountain biking and deep sea fishing are popular and surfing and SUP are especially good in the winter months. The north coast features lots of exposed reefs that pick up swells from W through to E with waves ranging in intensity and, with some research, you can find waves in summer on Fuerteventura. Best to get out early before the wind/crowds. Quad bike excursions are also available and Corralejo has a water park and more. Catch a ferry over to Lobos island or take a day trip to Lanzarote.

GET AROUND
It only takes two hours to drive the length of the island, so it’s worth hiring a car, especially to get to the most tucked-away surf spots. Taxis will drop you off at the beach, but you may have a walk to find one when you’re trying to get back.

CURRENCY
Euro (€) - £1 = €1.3 / US$1 = €0.8 All the cash facilities you’d expect in Europe.
FOOD AND DRINK
Corralejo is a busy tourist town and has everything you will need, including a couple of large supermarkets in the Spanish part of the town. Find cheaper stores with more variety off the main streets. LaJares, halfway between Carralejo and El Cotillo, is a very up and coming village within the surf community with funky restaurants and bars with regular live music.
AIRPORT
Fuerteventura Puerto del Rosario (FUE) airport is a 30 minute drive to Flag Beach / Corralejo. Taxis, buses and hire cars are available from the airport.
