The summer season is coming up

Planet Kitesurf deliver their top tips on where you should look to book your next kite trip

Summer’s the time when most people go on a kite trip – and that’s the problem! Finding a spot where you can fully enjoy kiting in the high season can be tricky and that’s why Planet Kitesurf Holidays has compiled this selection of their favourite summer spots where you can still find affordable kiting breaks away from the crowds.

Western Portugal – Viana do Castelo

Cabedelo Beach - Viana do Castelo

In Viana do Castelo, Where the Lima River meets the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll find a flat water bay protected by large breakwaters with reeling right handers at Cabedelo Beach. The best time for wind reliability is between May and September, right in the middle of the UK summer season, with conditions suitable for all levels of kiter. And all this is located less than two hours flight from the UK and within a short drive of Porto, one of Portugal’s biggest international airports.

There are numerous kitesurfing spots, including some of the world’s top wave riding locations, spread across the island and reliable winds blow throughout the summer season. Mauritius is one of the best kitesurfing destinations on the planet and the peak months for kiting are from May to November, which is the off-peak season for other tourists, so you can find great deals even in the luxury resorts (and they’re seriously luxurious).

Soma Bay

Planet Kitesurf Soma Bay

Getting to Soma Bay in Egypt couldn’t be easier – it’s less than an hour from Hurghada’s airport. There’s a large lagoon there with very reliable wind, and warm, waist-deep water. If you’re looking for somewhere to progress your riding and have fun that’s just a short flight from the UK and Europe, Soma should be on your shortlist.

Planet Kitesurf Keros

Limnos is everything you’d expect traditional Greece to be, with beautiful beaches and charming whitewashed villages. There are excellent riding conditions in Keros Bay, with waves, freeride conditions and flat water spread out along the same beach. Limnos has a choice of kite camps and the island is mercifully spared the worst excesses of the Greek summer season.

Planet Kitesurf Sicily

With great wind year round and plenty of direct flights from the UK and Europe, Sicily is a solid summer option. Head to Lo Stagnone where the shallow flat waters are perfect for beginners and improvers and enjoy daytime temperatures in the summer that never drop below 20˚C.

The Maldives

Planet Kitesurf Maldives

These tropical islands in the Indian Ocean offer a really special kiting experience. The pearl white beaches and azure waters of the Maldives are just begging to be kited with pristine, turquoise waters to shred through. Explore the coral lagoons and stay in five star accommodation where you can soothe your aching muscles in a relaxing spa. It’s a solid combo for kiting and luxury!

With excellent wind reliability throughout the year and a huge flat-water lagoon, this remote Moroccan town is one of the world’s top all-round kiting destinations. Located in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, Dakhla has a large lagoon with numerous places to stay around it and there are also several wave spots close by, including Oum Lambouir which regularly hosts the GKA Kite World Tour!

The Canaries’ least developed island in terms of tourism, Fuerteventura is a great place to kite with plenty of space to help you evade the crowds. It’s just a few hours flight from the UK and mainland Europe too. Head to Costa Calma and Sotavento in the south of the island where you’ll find extremely reliable winds and a good choice of affordable accommodation or Corralejo in the north – home to the only true five star luxury hotel on the island. You’ll find the strongest winds at Sotavento, with calmer conditions and more wave riding options up north.
