THE LURECrystal blue waters and stunning mountains a few kilometres away make Gizzeria one of the most beautiful corners of Calabria in southern Italy. They like a party there and completing the attraction is Hang Loose Beach, a great kitesurfing spot, with good thermal winds from April to September.
Gizzeria is located on the Tyrrhenian Sea and has fantastic learning conditions. Miles of obstacle-free beach and no danger of being lost at sea as Gizzeria lies within the Gulf of Lamezia Terme. Within a 30 minute drive there are other good beginner spots on the Ionian Sea at Steccato di Cutro. Although ideal for beginners, Gizzeria attracts a lot of pro riders too thanks to the regular conditions. Each year Hang Loose Beach host an international riding competition called the 'Aloha Surf and Beach Party' in July, featuring concerts and all night parties as well as an international competition. It has also become host of world class racing and on top of that there's also a good wave spot a kilometre upwind called Caposuvero.
WIND, WEATHER AND WATER
The best conditions are April to September in the prevailing northwest cross-onshore wind and flat waters. April, May, June and September can also experience the Scirocco wind from the southeast which blows cross-off with more intensity, from 25 – 35 knots and super flat water. The winds can be strong in the winter but are more frontal than thermal, so not as regular but there can be good wave conditions. In the summer the most popular kites are 12 or nine metres and the weather is very pleasant. There's a little rain in the spring, but it's full on sunshine in the summer. Spring temps: 15 – 22ºC / 59 – 72ºF. Summer: 22 - 33ºC / 72 – 91ºF. The water temperature through the main season ranges from 18 - 23ºC / 64 – 73ºF
Staying closest to the spot there are options, from hotels and apartments and even farm buildings on the coast. All budgets and tastes catered for.
HANG LOOSE BEACH teach all levels from April – September with a max ratio of 2:1. The centre provides a rescue boat, hot showers, a lawn to wash equipment, equipment rental, surf shop, restaurant and bar.
Hang Loose beach offer other watersports to help you enjoy the beautiful Calabrian Sea. Also visit other seaside towns, such as Tropea, Capo Vaticano or Lace, all within an hour's drive. Within a four hour boat ride you can visit the beautiful Aeolian Islands, or take a trip to the unspoilt mountains just a few kilometres away. Many routes around Calabria hold a lot of cultural and historical value.
You'll need to hire a car. Lamezia Terme is a five minute drive from the spot and, although there is a restaurant at Hang Loose Beach, the accommodation is all at least a kilometre away.
