Kite the Bay 2010
Over the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August a group of kitesurfers are planning to cross Morcambe Bay from Walney Island in Barrow to Starr Gate, Blackpool in Lancashire; a distance of 26 miles. The effort is to raise money for the RNLI and Bispham High School and will be supported by the Blackpool Light Craft Club and Sea Support. The money for the RNLI will go directly to the charity helping to save lives at sea. The money raised for Bispham High School is to help fund a number of different projects to empower the students and help others.
The 20 riders attempting the crossing will be covered by three safety crafts that will, hopefully, not be called into action. All the riders have certified their ability to complete the crossing and are insured for public liability through their membership of The British Kitesurfing Association (BKSA).
The event will hopefully run on either Saturday 28th, Sunday 29th, or Monday 30th August, giving a three day window for favourable conditions. However, if conditions are not deemed safe to complete the crossing then it will have to be staged the following weekend until conditions are right.
After the crossing there will be a BBQ held at BLCC, Starr Gate where there will be entertainment and raffle prizes.
