KITESURFING HOLIDAYS - PORTO POLLO
The Italian island of Sardinia is the largest island in the Mediterranean and lies off the west coast of mainland Italy. A beautiful island filled with wonderful beaches a huge array of activity opportunities and a wealth of European culture.
The epicentre of kitesurfing in Sardinia is focussed on Porto Pollo which lies on the northeast corner of the island at the narrow point between Sardinia and its smaller neighbour, Corsica. The wind systems travelling across the Med get funnelled through this gap to create some of the best wind stats in Europe. There are beaches in both directions that cater for different winds and types of kiting. You'll find everything from mirror flat lagoons (one is set up with a kicker and rails) to big bays where you can do long downwinders through to semi-secret beach breaks with up to four metre swells and exotic island locations with boat-only access...basically everyone is catered for!
WIND & WEATHER:
Cross and cross-onshore from the left. Best months are May to October. It's not a thermal location so wind patterns aren't as predictable as some locations, however, the winds tend to pick up for the middle of the afternoon. Prevailing winds usually come in three, five or nine day cycles. The beauty of Porto Pollo is that within an hour's drive you'll find many more beaches with different winds and conditions. Temperatures range from 20°C in May to 28°C in August.
The season starts off in May with waters of 16°C and peak in September at 26°C.
OFF THE WATER:
Safe for families and exciting for singles alike, Sardinia keeps everyone happy. Half a dozen restaurants are within walking distance of Porto Pollo. Palau village is a five minute drive away, Santa Teresa is 20 minutes away and the whole Emerald coast just a 30 minute drive away. Two beach bars are open late in the summer and more bars and clubs are only a taxi ride away. The place comes alive for a short but intense party season in July/August when lots of Italians flock to the island. Phi beach has one of the top voted clubs in '06, and Freshtraxxx take their clients on a boat across to Phi once a week for a night of mojitos and dancing. Sardinia, in spite of how that may sound, is all about a relaxed and chilled atmosphere. There's all sorts of accommodation available, from large villas to stylish apartments. Other sports available in the area include windsurfing, sailing, scuba diving, horse riding, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking and tennis.
Olbia (OLB) – about a 45 minute transfer to Porto Pollo.
Alghero (AHO) – two hour transfer; Cagliari (CAG) – three and a half hour transfer. There are also ports in Olbia and Santa Teresa for those wanting to drive from Europe.
Although everything is within walking distance if you're staying in Porto Pollo, there are other spots to visit and the island is very beautiful and it's great to have the freedom of a hire car to explore it a little. Just watch out for the crazy Italian drivers!
• Quaint villages.
• Great nightclubbing and partying.
• Secluded family villas.
