The 2010 FlyRadical M is based on the successful '09 model, keeping hold of its exceptional performance that was popular with team riders and customers alike. This year the spray has been completely eliminated and the riding comfort increased but not at the expense of its light wind performance and pop. The scoop-rocker line of the FlyRadical automatically adjusts itself to under or overpowered conditions and a slightly thinner tip shape helps for an even more asymmetric shape which, when combined with increased flex, helps you keep control in overpowered conditions. A wide centre section increases the surface area, keeping you afloat and a light wind-optimised rocker line increases speed and upwind performance. Thin ABS rails protect the paulownia wood core and a three dimensional construction is used to add the flex to the sides of the tips. The grab rail on the toe-side rail makes its return, making your board-off tricks even easier. All this comes together to create a tough, durable and high-performance board.
TEST TEAM NOTES:
The FlyRadical is good looking in a mature kind of way. There's an obvious integrity to the design, with an obvious wood core, tough bottom sheet and then you do a double-take at the outline. It's quite strikingly asymmetrical, which is quite unusual on a performance twin tip of this size. We're used to squat, square aggressive looking shapes. This however has a long, straight heel edge that goes round the wide tips and comes back into a much softer and shorter toe-side rail. The foot pads are soft, grippy and very comfortable and straps are a soft, fit for a very all-round style; a mix between that really locked-in wake-style feel and comfort and flexibility for more boosty board grabs and board-offs. The board has a comfortable amount of flex but retains a certain stiffness to maintain excellent freestyle characteristics. The flex comes into its own when dealing with chop and strong winds, and the stiffness for pop, but also in helping the board get up and going relatively early. The heel-side rail designed like this gives incredible traction upwind, doesn't spray you in the face at all and also doesn't take anything away from the board's freestyle energy. You can load this up all day long and it'll keep pinging you up. It's a work horse. It becomes even more interesting when you go to carve the board round to toe-side; you don't need much energy at all to initiate the turn. Carving round beautifully onto its shorter, softer edge it's so comfortable to ride in toe-side. So you have the best of both world's; pop, performance, speed and upwind ability on your more focussed heel-side and loads of comfort and a cruising nature on your weaker toeside. Makes sense, eh?
FlyRadical have produced solid, trustworthy and very ride-able boards for a while now, and this FlyRadical M is no different. Tough enough to stand up to the task on any beach, it's got bags of performance for radical freestylers down to intermediate riders, which will love the cruisy, easy-to-use toe-side rail. Only genuine hardcore freestyle merchants, who want to take-off on lots of tricks from toe-side, will find this area too soft.
The combination of high-performance freestyle attributes and very good user-friendliness for less capable riders. This is a keeper as it's tough, too
KW WOULD CHANGE:
Hardcore freestylers will want more stiffness in the toe-side rail for pop.
